Radionuclide Therapy

"BA" Cancer Hospital at Navsari, Gujarat is currently equipped 2 bedded high dose therapy ward for radionuclide therapy. We are currently providing radionuclide therapy using Iodine-131, Lu-177 PSMA and Lu-177 PRRT.

Introduction:

Radionuclide therapy is a one of the type of treatment modality for treating various: medical conditions including cancer.

The most common radiotracer being used for radionuclide therapy is Iodine - 131, which is commonly used for treating benign thyroid conditions (hyperfunctioning gland) and thyroid cancer. Iodine - 131 is administered orally after undertaking radiation safety measures.

The other radiotracers being used for radionuclide therapy are Lutetium - 177, Yttrium - 90, Actinium - 225 labelled with SSA or PSMA to treat neuroendocrine tumors and prostate cancer respectively.

The selection of the radiotracer depends on the medical condition to be treated, as predetermined by national and international guidelines.

Few common uses of Radionuclide Therapy

  • To treat hyperfunctioning thyroid disorders like Grave's disease, AFTN and toxic MNG using Iodine - 131.
  • To treat thyroid cancer patients after total thyroidectomy using Iodine - 131.
  • To treat metastatic castration resistant and castration naive prostate cancer patients using Lu - 177 PSMA.
  • To treat metastatic neuroendocrine tumors using Lu - 177 PRRT.
